Offers Piling Up for Talented 2006 Wing Dwight Lewis   PDF  Print  E-mail

When people talk about the elite talent coming out of Louisiana these days, the names which usually pop up are Tasmin Mitchell, D.J. Augustin, Demond Carter, and Perry Stevenson. Now a new prospect has been making a name for himself, and has been catching the attention of high major programs from all around the country. Elite Preps caught up with the father of Dwight Lewis this week, and has all the latest on the state of his current season and also where he stands in the recruiting process.

On Thursday night, Elite Preps spoke with Dwight Lewis, sr., who brought us up to speed on how things are going with his son these days.

"This has been a good year for him," Mr. Lewis said. "His team was picked to finish last in their district, but they actually made the playoffs. This season he’s averaging about 27 points per game, and 10 rebounds per game."

One of Lewis's strengths is his versatility. "In high, school, he mainly plays the two guard," Mr. Lewis said, "but he actually can play all five positions on the floor from time to time. With his height, he’s big enough that he can play in the post. When he gets to college, they’ll probably have him at the two guard."

"USC has been on him heavy. I talked to Tim Floyd a while back, and they’re interested," Mr. Lewis said. "Oklahoma, USC, Baylor, LSU, Kansas, Texas A&M, Texas and Florida are some of the ones that I’ve actually spoken with the head coaches about him. There are a few others—at least 12 or 13 altogether."

As far as offers go, Lewis mentioned Mississippi, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Florida, USC, Oklahoma, LSU, Baylor, and UCLA. "They all said that they had scholarships available for him," Mr. Lewis said. "Texas has not formally offered yet, but pretty much all the rest of them have."

At this time, Lewis has not narrowed his list down to a top five, nor does he have a favorite. "Not at this time," his father said. "Right now, he’s still concentrating as much as he can on his senior season, and helping his team in the playoffs," he said.

Regarding what Dwight is looking for in a college, Mr. Lewis said that "education will be important—both in the classroom and also on the court. He wants a place with good academics, but also he wants to be taught about basketball as well. He knows that he has a lot to learn. It's not just about playing time, it’s also about who will help him get better. It has to be reciprocal—him being with somebody that he can help, and also being with someone who can help him. Every kid’s dream is to make it to the NBA someday, and to do that you have to be somewhere that is going to help you get better. The environment of the school is important, how he gets along with the coaches and his teammates—the whole thing," Lewis explained.

"Grades won’t be a problem for him," Mr. Lewis said. "He has been on the honor roll ever since he has been on school. He recently took a practice ACT, and made a 24 on it."

Mr. Lewis said that a few visits have been made already, and that at least one more was already planned. "We’ve made it to LSU, he’s been to A&M, he's been to Texas, and we’re planning on visiting Baylor soon," he said.

"Everyone has an opportunity right now. I am encouraging him to look around at different schools as much as possible," Mr. Lewis said. "In the end, it will be his own decision, but I want him to be able to compare some different places so that he knows what all is available to him out there. He'd like to have his final decision made by the time school starts next year. And when he actually does make his decision, I want him to stick by his word. That's very important."
